These are some of the questions that are frequently asked:

Q:  Why do I have unclaimed funds?

A:  People have unclaimed funds for a number of reasons:  It could be that they have money coming from an old job they worked on, bank account that was closed, utility bill deposits, rental deposits returned, uncashed stocks and/or bonds, overpayment on insurance policies, unused rebate cards, etc.

Q: How did you find me and my information?

A: Our company is in the business of searching State and Federal databases for unclaimed funds, in order to let people know that they are owed money. This information is public record and anyone can search the database for information and find out if people are owed money.

Q: How do I know this is not a scam?

A: We run a legitimate asset/funds locator business.  Asset Recovery Consultants is registered with the State of Illinois, in the County of Will.   You can verify the credibility of our business for yourself and see that we are in good standing.

Q: How long until I receive my money? .

A:  Claims are reviewed in the date and order in which they are received. Processing time may be up to 12 weeks (Sometimes longer if claims are back logged), and dependent on the number of claims submitted to the office during the time frame your claim was received

Q: Can't I do this on my own?

A: Yes, you can. But some people prefer to use an asset/funds locator to assist with the claims process because we know the in's and out's of processing unclaimed funds and can assure a smooth process.

Q: How does the State/Fed get my funds/property?

A: State law requires financial institutions, insurance companies, public agencies and businesses to turn over unclaimed property to the State Treasurer's office if they have had no contact with the owners for some statutorily defined period of time.  Unclaimed funds are held by the State Treasurer's Office.  These unclaimed funds can be held indefinitely until claimed by the original owner or heir.

Q: What if I don't feel comfortable having my information out there?

A: Your state is required by law to identify the true owner of the unclaimed funds/property. This process is similar in each state. If you fail to provide the documentation, or if the documentation doesn’t pass verification, they are unable to disburse the funds. These requirements are for the protection of the accountholders.

Q: Why wasn't I notified that I have money?

A:  You may not have been notified because of a error with the address, sometimes people fail to leave a forwarding address, it is possible that it got lost in the mail, or otherwise misplaced. and sometimes, you just don’t get any notification about the funds at all.

Q: What if I have tried this and it didn't work?

A:  Asset Recovery Consultants offers assistance to claimants to help avoid unnecessary delays in documentation and payment of unclaimed assets.

Q: Can't I just have my lawyer do it? (For Bankruptcy Unclaimed Funds)

A:  It is possible that your lawyer no longer has your case and has moved on to other cases. Because your case is closed and they don’t get paid for closed cases, they are not interested in the case anymore. If they were interested in you getting your unclaimed funds back, then it would not have been sitting there all this time, (sometimes for several years) in the unclaimed funds account.
